Those who know the project know that we got a Very nice head start by licensing the source code for Hearts of Iron 2. Anyone who didn't know that already...well, now you do!

I should mention that our team is made up of regular gamers with real jobs (day jobs) like any of you, with a common interest: hardcore strategy. So as we were posting on the Hearts of Iron 2 forum like the geeks we are, we thought about what could be better in that game. We began discussing it on the forum, and made all kinds of lists full of ideas.

So when the time came and we got a license for the engine, we got to work. Our target audience was still hardcore strategy gamers, and we actually liked the general "feel" of the game, so we decided to change as little as possible in terms of the presentation of the game -- or rather, to make the changes as natural as possible for fans of the game.

In retrospect that might not have been the wisest decision, as some people now confuse Arsenal of Democracy with a run-of-the-mill mod / patch. But here we are 2 years later, and we've done as planned.

Of course, it was a pretty rocky start -- looking through more than a hundred thousand lines of code without any kind of documentation or help. The tools were really created by and for Paradox's internal development team, and weren't originally intended to be used by external developers. But we got the hang of it; after 3 months we had ironed out all the bugs we knew of (and had read about on the forum), and started working on new features.

As I mentioned previously, we tried to make the feel of the game the same, so we spent most of our time "under the hood" – it's like giving a Lada (or an old Honda, or something equally weak) a Ferrari motor – that kind of thing.

Basically hoi2 is all about 4 things: Economy, Production, Combat, Historical Accuracy.

So what do you think we completely remade? That's right -- all 4 of them. Now what new features does AOD have compared to hoi2, you ask? A lot. For PR purposes we needed to make a feature list with the new stuff, and it was more than 4 pages, but don't worry, I wont repeat that here.

But let's talk a little about the production system. In hoi2 each province had an industrial capacity, and this IC could then be used to produce units or make money. We wanted to simulate a more in-depth view of a real production system, so we reworked the mechanics into production lines.

So now each production line takes time to set up, and:
gets a gearing bonus for each completed set of equipment.
can be paused while using up a low amount of IC, to keep the line hot and ready.
can be accelerated by pushing twice or triple the amount of IC into a line.
research can affect the production speed and gearing mechanics.
lines can be upgraded to newer types of units – this takes some time for retooling, and it loses some of its gearing bonus.
That really just scratches the surface of changes to production.

Basically, production now has a much more realistic feel, as each line is important and you won't abandon a good line with lots of gearing without a Very good reason.

Also, we've totally reworked the economy. In AOD money is king. War is not free, and your soldiers expect to get paid. Building upkeep is not free, and destroyed buildings and anti-aircraft installations do not rebuild themselves magically; it all costs money. We didn't want this all to get too confusing, so we've helped the gamer to make it all easy and accessible. We added sliders and a whole bunch of helpful features to let the player determine and change the entire economy within seconds, which is a godsend in a simulation as deep as AOD. No more micro management -- just make it as you want.

I think we have a Very good economic and production simulation now, with a lot of the tough stuff in. Of course, we could have gone more in-depth, like better simulating the effects of the depression, price fluctuations of consumer goods, butter, milk and all sorts of things -- but AOD is a war simulation, and not an economy simulator. So we used KISS! (keep it simple, stupid!) and made our current system.
