1939年が進んでいくにつれて、世界は容赦なく第二次世界大戦へと進んでいった。　アジアでは大日本帝国が中国の諸軍閥との紛争から抜け出せなくなっていた。　3月にはイタリアがアルバニアに攻撃を仕掛け併合してしまった。　ドイツはチェコスロヴァキアを併合し傀儡政権をスロヴァキアに建てた。　8月の23日には、ドイツがモロトフ-リッペントロプ協定にてポーランドの分割を提案してきており、ソ連はこれを受諾した。　一週間後、ドイツが同協定の自らの義務を果たす為にポーランドへと攻撃を仕掛けると、ヨーロッパでの戦争が幕を開けた。　オランダを加えた連合諸国はポーランドを救おうと無駄な試みを行ったが、急速に圧倒されていった。　9月23日に、私、ソ連、はポーランドの半分を受け取った。　この後直ぐに南アフリカが連合を見捨てドイツと独自の平和協定を結んだ。　ドイツはオランダへと矛先を変え、オランダのヨーロッパ内の拠点を降伏させた。　

As 1939 progressed the world marched inexorably towards a second world war. In Asia the Empire of Japan was locked into a struggle with the Chinese warlords. In March, Italy attacked and annexed Albania. Germany annexed Czechoslovakia and created a puppet in Slovakia. On the 23rd of August Germany proposed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact to partition Poland which I accepted. The war in Europe kicked off a week later when Germany fulfilled its end of the bargain and attacked Poland. The Allies joined by the Netherlands made a futile attempt at saving Poland, but it was quickly overwhelmed. On the 23rd of September I inherited my half of Poland. Soon after South Africa abandoned the Allies and made a separate peace with Germany. Germany turned its attention to the Netherlands and forced it to capitulate it’s European holdings.

世界の他の国々の注意がヨーロッパで継続中の戦争に向いている間に、私はフィンランドが所有する我々の本国プロヴィンスへの領有権を主張することにした。　秋の間に58師団をフィンランドとの国境に集めておき、11月17日にはフィンランドがわが国の要求をはね付けたことによって冬戦争が幕を開けた。　わが国は何度か同規模での攻撃を仕掛けたが、冬の最中には何の進歩も得られなかった。　何か大規模な攻勢を仕掛けるには、天候が回復する1940年の春まで待つことを強制されたのだった。

With the rest of the world’s attention turned towards the ongoing conflict in Europe, I decided it was time to claim my core provinces from Finland. During the fall I massed 58 divisions on the border with Finland. On the 17th of November, the Winter War kicked off when they refused to cave into my demands. I tried a few same scale attacks but was unable to make any headway in the dead of winter. I was forced to put off any major offensives until the weather improved in the spring of 1940.

1940年4月7日、真剣な砲兵の集中砲火を始めるには充分なほど天気が回復したと判断した。　わが国の最初の目標はヴィボルグとカヤーニとなる。

On April 7th 1940 I decide that the weather has improved enough to begin my artillery barrage in earnest. My first two targets will be the provinces of Viipuri and Kajaani.

アーセナル・オブ・デモクラシーでは地上ユニットに砲撃任務を行わせられる任務が新たに追加された。　この砲撃能力は砲兵旅団が任務を行う師団に付属している場合飛躍的に向上する。　もちろん、敵を砲撃するのに最良の旅団は新たに導入された列車砲旅団だ。　私は列車砲を持った軍を作成して、次のスクリーンショットにあるようにレニングラードに配置しておいた。　砲撃任務を行うとそのユニットの物資と指揮統制を消耗するので、個人的には、3師団のみで構成された特別な軍に砲兵を集中しておき、この軍を敵への砲撃に特化させて使うことが最適であると考える。

In Arsenal of Democracy there is a new feature that allows ground units to conduct artillery bombardments. This ability is greatly increased if an artillery brigade is attached to the division. Of course the best brigade for shelling the enemy is the new railway artillery brigade. I built an army with railway artillery and placed it in Leningrad as shown in the next screen. Since performing artillery bombardment missions reduces a unit’s supplies and organization, I have found that is best to concentrate artillery in special 3 division armies whose main purpose is to shell the enemy.

4月の18日までに、砲撃任務は明らかな影響を与えており、法している部隊で攻撃を開始することで簡単にこれら2つの要塞化されたプロヴィンスを奪うことができたのだった。

On the 18th of April, the artillery bombardment has taken affect and I can launch an attack with my surrounding forces and easily take the two fortified provinces.

迅速に、次の攻撃をヘルシンキへと定めフィンランドと和平交渉を開始したいと思います。　この戦いの間に、我が国のドイツとの不可侵条約が期限切れとなったので、可能な限り早くフィンランドとの戦争を終わらせることの緊急性が増しました。

A quick follow-up attack is launched through Helsinki to bring on peace negotiations with Finland. During the battle my nonaggression pact with Germany expires add to the urgency of ending the war with Finland as soon as possible.

しばらくの後に冬戦争の終結イベントが発生した時、私は要求どおりの条件での講和を申し出ました。　何とフィンランドは拒否し、我が国の不満度が5％上昇しました。　このお返しは、2週間後にフィンランドを併合することで行われた。

When the End of Winter war event fired a short time later, I offered to settle for what I had asked for. The Finns refused, which increased my dissent by 5.00. I got payback for this two weeks later when Finland was annexed.

1940年6月、バルト諸国を征服することを決断した。　もちろん、それらの国々は、大した抵抗もできず、2週間以内にすべて敗北した。　ベッサラビアを要求して、緩衝となっていた地域を獲得するという目的は達成された。

In June of 1940 I decided to conquer the Baltic States. They of course did not put up much of a fight and were all defeated in less than two weeks. After claiming Bessarabia, my acquisition of buffer zones was complete.

1940年が終わりを告げる頃、ドイツという災厄が遠くに見えてきていた。

As 1940 drew to a close, the German menace loomed in the distance.
